GHK-Cu is a copper peptide found naturally in human blood, saliva, and urine. Levels fall with age, and it has become one of the most popular ingredients in anti aging skincare. Many websites list dozens of benefits, but the evidence behind them varies from placebo controlled human studies to a single lab experiment.
A 2026 systematic review found that only a handful of human studies have directly tested GHK-Cu as the main treatment, with most of the research done in cells and animals. We ranked 10 GHK-Cu benefits from the strongest human evidence to the weakest, so you can see which claims hold up. A broader overview of what GHK-Cu is explains where it comes from and how it works.

1. Firmer, Denser Skin
Evidence: Placebo controlled human studies
In a 12 week study of 71 women with sun damaged skin, a GHK-Cu facial cream improved skin laxity, clarity, and appearance and increased skin density and thickness. A second 12 week study of 67 women aged 50 to 59 found similar improvements in firmness. These results are the main reason GHK-Cu is used in skin firming and anti aging products.
2. Fewer Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Evidence: Placebo controlled human studies
The same facial studies found that GHK-Cu creams reduced fine lines and the depth of wrinkles over 12 weeks. Results are gradual and modest, similar to other gentle anti aging ingredients, and more detail on GHK-Cu for wrinkle reduction and skin firming covers what to expect.
3. More Collagen
Evidence: Small human biopsy study
In a study that measured collagen in skin biopsies after one month of applying creams to the thighs, collagen increased in 70% of women using GHK-Cu, compared with 50% using vitamin C and 40% using retinoic acid. The study was small, but it is one of the few that measured collagen directly in human skin. The process is explained step by step in how GHK-Cu stimulates collagen.
4. Smoother Under Eye Skin
Evidence: One placebo controlled human study
A GHK-Cu eye cream tested on 41 women for 12 weeks performed better than both a placebo and a vitamin K eye cream at reducing lines and wrinkles and increasing skin density and thickness. The thin skin around the eyes is often where GHK-Cu is used first, and GHK-Cu for under eye rejuvenation covers how it is applied there.
5. More Even Skin Tone
Evidence: One human study
In the 12 week study of women aged 50 to 59, the GHK-Cu cream also reduced mottled pigmentation along with fine lines and coarse wrinkles. Evidence for dark spots is limited to this kind of overall improvement rather than trials designed for hyperpigmentation, as discussed in GHK-Cu for hyperpigmentation and sun damage.
6. Faster Wound Healing
Evidence: One placebo controlled human trial
In a multicenter trial of people with diabetic foot ulcers, a GHK-Cu gel increased median ulcer closure to 98.5% versus 60.8% with a placebo gel. This is the strongest human wound evidence, though it is a single trial from 1994. The wider research on GHK-Cu wound healing and tissue repair is mostly from animal studies.
7. Hair Growth
Evidence: Lab studies, human data only in combination products
In lab studies, a related copper peptide lengthened human hair follicles and supported the cells that drive hair growth. In people, a 6 month trial of a product combining GHK with another ingredient increased hair count compared with placebo, with no difference in hair thickness, and it did not test GHK-Cu on its own. More on the research behind GHK-Cu for hair growth, including topical and injectable use.
8. Scar and Stretch Mark Remodeling
Evidence: Lab and animal studies
GHK-Cu helps regulate the enzymes that break down and rebuild collagen, which is why it has been studied for skin remodeling and tissue repair. There are no controlled human trials for scars or stretch marks yet. The current research on GHK-Cu for stretch marks and scar remodeling is at an early stage.
9. Antioxidant and Anti Inflammatory Effects
Evidence: Lab and animal studies
GHK has been shown in the lab to neutralize damaging by products of lipid peroxidation and protect skin cells from UV radiation, and wounds treated with GHK in animals had higher levels of antioxidant enzymes. These effects have not been measured directly in human skin.
10. Gene Expression Changes
Evidence: Computer and lab analysis
Using a large gene database, researchers found that GHK changed the activity of 31.2% of human genes by 50% or more, including genes linked to tissue repair and antioxidant defense. This is often described online as resetting genes to a younger state, but it comes from computer analysis of cell data, not studies in people. The details are covered in GHK-Cu gene expression research.
Benefits Without Human Evidence
Reviews also describe GHK supporting nerve outgrowth, lung tissue, bone, liver, and stomach lining repair, along with anti anxiety and anti pain effects. These findings come from cell cultures and animal studies. Until they are tested in people, they should be treated as research leads rather than proven benefits.
How Long Does It Take to See GHK-Cu Benefits?
Most human skin studies measured results at about 12 weeks of daily use. Smoother, more hydrated skin may show up within a few weeks, while changes in firmness and wrinkles take longer. Using more product or applying it more often does not speed up results.
Which Brand Is Best for GHK-Cu?
Look for a disclosed GHK-Cu strength, a short ingredient list without fragrance, and products made under quality controls. Many over the counter products do not say how much GHK-Cu they contain. The best copper peptide creams differ mainly in strength and added actives, and a prescription GHK-Cu cream is compounded by a licensed pharmacy at a known strength after a clinician review.
What the Evidence Does and Does Not Support
The evidence supports GHK-Cu creams for modest improvements in skin firmness, density, fine lines, and wrinkles over about 12 weeks, and one trial supports faster healing of diabetic ulcers. Most of the skin studies were small, and several were presented at conferences rather than published in peer reviewed journals. Claims about hair, scars, inflammation, gene resetting, and other organs rely mainly on lab and animal research. Results vary from person to person, and the clinical safety and efficacy data for GHK-Cu are still growing.
